EIn 2002, the Minister of Defense, Mrs. Michelle Bachelet, the Minister of Housing and Urbanism Mr. Jaime Ravinet and the Army Commander-in-Chief, General Juan Emilio Cheyre, approach relative subjects to the reassignment, administration and disposition of lands of the State Treasury destined to the Army. For the case of Chena, the Partial Term of Destination for creation of Public an Urban Park was established, for which 38 hectares were transferred to the Metropolitan Park of Santiago (MPS). In 2003 the Agreement is signed: "Authorization of Use, Army of Chile to Metropolitan Park of Santiago”.

The Metropolitan Park of Santiago, gets water rights SERVIU to allow to the irrigation of the park, beginning the investments with sectorial funds MINVU 2004 -2007 (895 million pesos), that finished in December of 2007, considering today already in state of consolidation, given the gradual and positive answer of the users. Here, are emphasized the construction of Building access, cafeteria and public baths, hard Square, landscape areas with urban furniture, artificial lagoon, soccer field, slope reforestation with native trees and modernized irrigation, roads, parking, signaling, systems of electrical irrigation for the operation of the green areas. Until today, it is the MPS that has worried about the conservation and monitoring, via direct management. The 2008 formed an Advance and Support Committee to the Chena Park, which makes activities at local level, fomenting the citizen participation.

By express instructions of the Minister of House and Urbanism, Mrs. Patricia Poblete Jiménez, was included in the Project of Budget 2009 of the MPS, the maintenance of the South Metropolitan Park of Chena Hills, this as a form to preserve the sectorial investment already done, also as a form to show the preoccupation of the MINVU by the consolidation of public green areas with the purpose of improving the quality of life of the people, furthermore in a so devoid and deficit zone, in addition assuming a commitment with the community. Thus, the conservation of the South Metropolitan Park of Chena, will contribute on the one hand, to maintain the increase of the green areas of the city of Santiago, by means of the maintenance of the investment made for its construction, improving the quality of life of 14 communes of the South zone of the Great Santiago, that present low index of green areas by inhabitant.

Natural Park Renca Hills

EIn the urban expansion of Santiago, their neighborhoods have reached the geographic edge of the valley. The hill-island which have been within the area of the city - Santa Lucia, Blanco, Chena, Renca- have gained two magnitudes for this one: metropolitan and neighborhoods.

The first metropolitan magnitude, forming a distance horizon, by the figure of a massive peak sequence and that gives form to the geographic space of the river basins of Maipo and Mapocho.
The hills of Renca, and the lateral west of San Cristóbal, conforms the North access of Santiago. There is an outside and inside of the city, limited by the Américo Vespucio Avenue, and that has a relation with the space of the valley in the pass of these hills.

The second magnitude that has taken these hills is the one of the neighborhoods, in where the streets follow the forms of the mount foot. To the way in which the coastal avenues border the sea, there are avenues that border hills and their margins.

A metropolitan park like Renca Hills, inserted in the Green Plan of the Bicentennial, recognizes the great interest to accede to the natural landscapes like an opportunity of cultural development in the amplitude and diversity of the spaces that are inhabited (Sartori and Carreño, 2004)

From 2004, it is in use between the Metropolitan Park of Santiago and the Municipality of Renca, an agreement that unites efforts and resources for the development of a green area in the place.

The Municipality has compromised  55.76 hectares (Lots I, H and G) of the Renca Hill, for Stage I, of a total 210 hectares of natural park, assigned by the Communal Regulating Plan. The Municipality compromises the Administration and Maintenance of the Park, after its different stages from consolidation.
On the other hand, the Metropolitan Park since then has managed the Masterful Plan Design (2004), financing and execution like: the water adduction from the La Punta channel, pools and room of pumps for the landscape access and control with bath building (2005). Also it is counted on a house of pumps for potable water impulsion that supports the construction of a multipurpose room with public baths, in the denominated "Plaza Alta" (2006). The Municipality has given in loaning for use agreement lands and surfaces in which the tasks are executed.
The Forest Area of Renca Hill, is formed by 50.26 hectares of surface, devastated year to year by forest fire.

Today, the first stage of reforestation of 17.03 hectares with native trees is being executed, equivalent to more than 10,000 native trees with modernized irrigation, accompanied by the construction of fire-resistant peripherals.

For 2009, a reforestation of 33 hectares is projected, equivalent to more than 20,000 trees. The species come from the Breeding We Alliwen, located in the Center of Environmental Forest Education Santiago of the MPS, and the species to establish are: quillay, carob tree, barraco, ñipa, molle, quebracho and tare. Both reforestations are financed with public investment funds, previous sectorial evaluation.

To the date, 495 million pesos between 2005 -2007 have been inverted, being left the reforestations 2008-2009, equivalent to more than 30,000 trees (50 hectares) and one investment of 370 million pesos.
